“Hehehe, you see, as much as I enjoyed science, I could never do stuff like that! It makes my head hurt to think about it! Why get all technically with it when all the senses you need are right there? Why bother learning from people who don’t really understand! Only the blind can lead the blind, Miss Lalonde! You cannot learn something from someone who does not understand!”
>You remember this well, people attempting to teach you to see how they saw fit. It was impossible to learn that way, no, it was something you had to learn on your own. You taught yourself to see, and you hoped Rose might learn to teach herself as well.
When you first received your cane, you became confused. How such a small object would help you see was beyond your imagination, but sure enough it happened. Before long, you were clumsily feeling walls and tapping down steps, an infant in your new conditions. You could not let others coddle you like this, you were sure. You had to learn on your own, and make mistakes, and grow from them. It was always to be that way.
“Art? I loved art! Especially crayons, hehehe! I used to draw a lot when I was 12! I took classes and everything! Karkat went to them with me, but he sucked, hehehe! I was merely saying justice is a linear subject! There is the truth, and there is a lie, and that is that! However, art is an expression, not a concept! Hehehe, it is expression and ideas! It is one thing in this world that you cannot control! It has no yes or no, black or white; it is simply art!”
>You had long since been focusing on your surroundings, as it was habitual by now. You inhale deeply, brushing your fingers across the dewy grass and pressing indents into the soft soil as a soft smile appears on your face, and you drum your fingers on the soft earth.
“All is as you said, hehehe, but the ground is soft! It means it has been upturned, possibly by machines, possibly by moles! The air is clear, which means it’s still frosty here yet, and that all the plants are growing in good health! People also have yet to come here, as the ground is lumpy and lacks foot-imprints! It’s is a quiet place, meant for clearing your mind, as of this moment! Hehehe~
Oh? But if there is no little things, there can be no larger concept! But perhaps it is a mix? Small and large, all things matter! Take pride in details, I say!
Really? I would think you would have met at least one or two! Hehehe, people do like to wander, after all! But don’t worry, most of them are study freaks or junkies in the first place! Hehehehe!”
>You pause for a moment, but a grin cracks out upon your face as you sit up and stretch your muscles, pulling grass out of your hair.
“Sounds like a deal to me! I will see to it that such a promise is kept! Hehehe, I’m sure you will keep up your end of the bargain as well?”

Possibly because I’m learning from other blind people? Have you heard of Daniel Kish, Terezi? He’s used the concept of echolocation to make it unnecessary for him to use his cane. I’m obviously not at that level, and I’m unsure whether I ever will, since I began with the substantial disadvantage of having lost my sight at a later age, but I’m going to endeavor to improve, even if the method by which he does it seems like it would be a distracting noise to those around one.
You can’t remember whether the person who showed you how to use your cane, but you do remember that it had been comforting to know that the people in attendance and teaching at the seminar had all been blind. Others who knew what it was like to struggle like that.
You had never wanted to make mistakes, never wanted to look foolish, and maybe that was your mother’s subtle pressure not to embarrass her, though you knew at least part of that was your own pressure.
Technicality’s served me well. Again, I find it interesting how you see some fields in purely linear formats and refuse to admit that the same method might work for others in other fields. Don’t you perceive the sighted not to be sufficiently appreciating the world around them? Is the only right way to be blind and to embrace one’s other senses? That’s a dangerous proposition, you know.
Even justice isn’t linear, and I’ve acknowledged that my own view of my senses isn’t wholly as functional units rather than inputs to appreciate. There isn’t always clear innocence or guilt, so while facts and truths are normally relatively rigid, there’s a great deal of bend; lies of omission come to mind, as do dubious circumstances like castle doctrine.
You press your fingers into the ground as well, trying to appreciate the things that Terezi was talking about, but another part of you just couldn’t see the logic to it.
All of this may be true, and it may be beautiful, but it doesn’t seem relevant to your greater point about being able to navigate seamlessly like you implied earlier.
It’s true, though, I think there’s a great deal of relevance to working models of emergence theory: complex systems can come from simple parts, and in turn their elegance can be rendered in simple fashions. So, like you said, there’s validity to both models, especially when they’re paired to create something else.
Well, I’m not from around here, so this is my first year around these parts. I’d like to hang out more with you sometime, because you seem to be nice.
Though she can’t see it, you smile just a little bit.
Fear not, Ms. Pyrope. My love for language stems not from a pathological desire to prove myself to be superior to all...
