Ah, I see.  What do you do, if you don’t mind me asking?

At first, the conversation was merely for politeness’ sake, but you find that it’s pleasant having a little conversation on a lonely abortive evening of what was supposed to be an exciting night.

Well, you may have broken it, but it was certainly no grave fault of your own.  It was just an accident.  Either way, you had no moral obligation to help me, so I’m appreciative of what you did.

Hmm…if you like, come in for a little while.  I’ll make some tea, and seeing as it’s a little chilly outside still, the warmth might be a pleasant respite.
